Overview
History of Valley of Flowers
The Valley of Flowers was discovered in 1931 by three British mountaineers — R.L. Holdsworth, Frank S. Smythe, and Eric Shipton. Since then, it has become one of the most celebrated natural wonders of India. Recognized for its breathtaking beauty and rich biodiversity, this enchanting valley has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to its vibrant blooms surrounded by majestic snow-clad peaks.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
Spread across approximately 87.5 square miles, the Valley of Flowers is a pristine alpine meadow that hosts an incredible variety of wildflowers and medicinal plants. These rare herbs contribute to the valley’s mythological importance—it is believed that Lord Hanuman collected the legendary Sanjeevani Booti from this very valley to heal Lakshman, Lord Rama’s brother, during the epic Ramayana. This sacred connection makes the valley not only a natural paradise but also a spiritual landmark.
