Lumba Sumba Pass

Lumba Sumba Trek is one of the new and adventures trekking routes identified in eastern Nepal. Offering some of the most spectacular Himalayan landscapes, this trekking route is home to different ethnic groups like the Limbus, Sherpas, Rai, Gurung, Magars, Newars and Tamangs. The trek runs through Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA) in the eastern Himalaya, Lumba Sumba Peak (5200 meters) is the major attraction of this route, the world third highest mountain Kanchenjunga (8586 meters) also views in this route.

Kathmandu-Fungling(1777m)

Drive to Fungling via Phidim

Fungling-Mitlung(909m)

Trek starts from Sherpa Tole at Fungling, the gateway to the trail. Trek to Hangedawa passing through beautiful Cardamom fields and Alnus trees. Proceed to Mitlung passing through Asangpati Tole, Gaigode Tole, Panisar Tole and Pawa village.

Mitlung-Chiruwa(1246m)

Trek along the bank of Tamor river to Furumba and continue to Mitlung. Precede Tawa village passing Siwa Bazaar and ascend to Thiwa village which houses KCAP entrance gate. Descend to Chiruwa.

Chiruwa-Lelep(1687m)

Trek along Tamor river to Tapethok passing through Ulnus forest and Beautiful Cardamom fields. After lunch proceed to Lelep, Which houses the KCAP headquarters.

Lelep-Ela Danda(2051m)

Trek along Tamor river through dense forest and cross the suspension bridge. Ascend through the dense pine forest to reach a monastery and descend to Gowatar. Proceed to Ela Danda passing through a big stone, two waterfalls and crossing Tamor River.

Ela Danda-Selep Kharka(2525m)

Trekking through Ulnus and Rhododendron forest for an hour takes to a suspension bridge. Trek to Maguwa through dense bamboo grooves which is also the habitat of red panda. Proceed to Selep Kharka passing through maple and ulnus forest.

Selep Kharka-Olangchung Gola (3208 m)

Trek to Jongim, a flat land surrounded by snowcapped hills. Trek uphill to reach Ramite where the mixed forest of Deodar and Rhododendron can be seen. Proceed to the beautiful Sherpa village, Olangchung Gola. The village houses a 465 years old monastery with golden manuscript.

Olangchung Gola- Upper Langmale (3893 m)

Next 3 days will pass through complete wilderness, so hire a local Sherpa to avoid getting lost. Trek to Jadak passing through pine and Rhododendron forest. Proceed to Upper Langmale.

Upper Langmale- Pass Camp (4747 m)

Trek along the Tamor River till reaching Tangchetar. Proceed to Pass Camp.

Pass Camp- Chaurikharka (4594 m)

This is the most difficult part of the trek. The trek passes through Lumba Sumba Peak (5200 m) and the trail goes up and down on the ways. From the peak, descend down to Chaurikharka.

Chaurikharka- Thudam (3500 m)

Trekking downhill from Chaurikharka takes to the junction of two roads, one to Lyasha in Tibet and other to Thudam village. Proceed to small Sherpa village of Thudam.

Thudam – Kharka (2877 m)

Trek along the banks of Chujung Khola. Panoramic view of peaks in the Makalu range can be seen on the way. Proceed to Kharka passing through lots of small bushes and bamboo grooves, the habitat of red Panda.

Kharka – Chhyamthang (2229 m)

Trek to Chaurikharka passing through dense Rhododendron forest. Proceed downhill until reaching Arun river, cross the suspension bridge and proceed towards Chhyamthang village.

Chhyamthang – Hatiya (1595 m)

Trek to Gimber village passing through dense Rhododendron forest. Spectacular view of Makalu range can be seen from Gimber. Precede to Hariya, a small village of Bhote people and is the entry point of Makalu National Park.

Hatiya - Gola

Trek along the bank of Arun river until reaching the confluence of Arun and Barun rivers. Proceed towards Gola, a small village with only few houses with Sherpa, Rai and Tamang people residing there.

Gola – Gadhi

Trek to a small Gurung village of Pathibhara passing through paddy fields. From here the trail passes through agricultural land, plenty of water resources and few settlements along the way before reaching Gadhi, a small village market.

Gadhi – Khandbari (1022 m)

Trek downhill until reaching Arun river. Cross the river and trek uphill to Num village. A drive of around 5hrs. Takes to Khandbari, the district headquarter of Sankhuwasabha district. Take a bus to Kathmandu via Dharan or Biratnagar. Flights can be taken from Tumlingtar airstrip.
